Congenital athymia is an ultra-rare immune condition that usually takes a child’s life before the age of three unless they have Rethymic’s life-saving thymic tissue implant surgery. The only thing is, it takes awhile for the patients to fully restore their immune system. Strict protocols in the meantime can be isolating and dull. The story of Sadie’s Search is an attempt to distract and make sense of something as painful as being alone.
Sadie is a stem cell who sets out on a journey to understand her purpose, but finds herself lost when she can’t locate the thymus. As she searches high and low to find her place in the body, she follows directions and discovers a school where she and other stem cells are transformed into T cells and learn how to protect their home.
